NeFCA PhD Workshop: Journalism, Media Industries and Policy
Submission deadline for abstracts: September 4, 2020.

This NeFCA PhD workshop brings together up-and-coming communication scholars with experienced colleagues in the field. The goal of this colloquium is to provide mentorship to members of the Journalism and Media Industries and Policy divisions.

All selected participants will get the opportunity to present their PhD projects and receive project-specific feedback in a constructive atmosphere from experienced scholars in the field, as well as general career development advice. The Colloquium will thus provide the opportunity to meet experts as well as fellow PhD candidates from different backgrounds working on related topics.

We welcome theoretical and empirical PhD projects working on journalism studies and media industries and policy. The organizers particularly encourage the submission of scholarly work at the crossroads of both divisions to advance our understanding of how journalism works within the broader media industry. Subject areas include, but are not limited to, the business models of news media, media convergence in the newsroom, journalism and media policies. We strongly support submissions from PhD candidates, who are rather at the beginning or in the middle of their project as they benefit from feedback the most.

PhD students should submit an abstract of maximum 500 words (excluding references) outlining the 1) topic, 2) rationale, 3) theoretical approach and 4), if applicable, empirical application of the PhD project. Name, affiliation, expected graduation date and supervisor should be indicated separately. Applicants are also asked to provide a list of five potential respondents that are likely to attend a workshop in the European context.

Submissions should be sent by e-mail to Kenza Lamot (kenza.lamot@uantwerpen.be) no later than by the 4th of September 2020. A notification of acceptance will be sent late September 2020. Participants whose abstracts are successful in the review process will be asked to submit a research proposal/outline of up to maximum 6000 words by the 20th of November in which they elaborate on 1) topic, 2) rationale, 3) theoretical approach, 4) if applicable, empirical application, and 5) (preliminary) results. Feel free to point out aspects, which you especially would like to receive feedback on/ which you are struggling with. It will be sent to the selected respondents to provide them with a comprehensive picture of the project.

The PhD Workshop will be held on Wednesday December 9, 2020 at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Antwerp. There will be a small fee for attendance – 35 EUR (NeFCA members)/ 50 EUR (non NeFCA members). This fee includes workshop attendance, refreshments and snacks during coffee breaks and lunch.
