On May 31, from 3:00pm to 4:00pm, Dr. Sunny Xun Liu will give a talk on the impact of social technology at the School for Mass Communication @ KU Leuven. Dr. Liu is the director of the Social Media Lab at Stanford University. Dr. Liu’s research focuses on the social and psychological effects of social media and AI, social media and well-being, and how the design of social robots impact psychological perceptions. In her talk she will present three studies that examine the broader impact of social technology. The first study is a meta-analysis of the connection between social media use and well-being. Dr. Liu and her co-authors collected all empirical publications that examined the association between the amount of social media use and at least one of six forms of psychological well-being from 2006 to 2018 and identified different conceptual mechanisms linking social media use and well-being. The second study focuses on the phone. Drawing on the social cognitive theory of social class and using digital parenting as a context, the paper argues that the fundamental values individuals assigned to the technology are social class based. Dr. Liu and her co-authors developed the concept of class-based phone orientations, tested it, and explored how it differs across social classes and in what ways it influences parental mediation behaviors. The third study explores social robots and older adults and how the perceptions of social robots translate to both hopes and fears of this new type of social technology.
