Communicating Climate Hope

On 15 and 16 August 2024, the Communicating Climate Hope (CCH) conference took place, as a two-day hybrid event organized by the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada, and Tilburg University (TiU) in the Netherlands. NeFCA provided funding for the Tilburg part of the program.

While mainly attended by scholars, CCH in Tilburg offered a combination of academic presentations and participatory workshops in environmental art and design. Keynote speakers were Noëlle Aarts (RU Nijmegen; on connecting in times of division), Jenny Pickerill (University of Sheffield; on hopeful climate action), and Reyer Gerlagh (Tilburg University; on environmental economics and activism).

The participatory workshops involved the design of a manifesto, a climate activism game, and the artistic visualization of climate change. The parallel sessions addressed topics such as metaphor and framing, youth in climate discourse, storytelling, motivating change, activism, and climate anxiety. In Tilburg, there were 45 on-site participants, and 10 participants attended online.

The full program, as well as abstracts for all plenaries, presentations, and workshops can be found at the CCH 2024 website.
