Etmaal 2024 Call for Papers
Responsible Communication
During the Etmaal 2024, we will engage with the theme of Responsible Communication. As the world goes through social and technological transformations, scholars need to consider the questions of responsibility and societal impacts. While modern technologies provide ample opportunities to access, verify, and study seemingly unlimited information online, there is a simultaneous growth of misinformation, fake news, and ensuing confusion. Likewise, while contemporary TV shows, movies, and advertisements increasingly represent diverse groups of people, the quality of such depictions is still questionable. Media, technology, and communications are posed as both sources of societal challenges and as possible solutions. Communication scholars are well-suited to examine the ethical dimensions of contemporary media culture. Therefore, we invite the participants to consider questions like: What does it mean for institutions, organizations, and individuals to communicate responsibly? What is the role of technology in promoting and challenging responsible communication and media? What media content fosters positive and negative social impacts both directly and indirectly? We encourage participants to seek answers to these questions by exploring different perspectives, including but not limited to psychological, social, organizational, economic, political, environmental, and technological dimensions of communication.
The Etmaal 2024 will take place from the 8th to the 9th of February in Rotterdam, a vibrant city known for its diverse population and for one of the greatest renaissance thinkers Desiderius Erasmus. We invite scholars who work on communication science and media studies topics to submit abstracts about the following themes related to NeFCA divisions and working groups:

General submissions
Submissions should take the form of 600-word abstracts and are due on November 10th, 2023, before 17:00. Please submit your abstract using the form on the conference website (accessible from 11th October onwards). There is a limit of one first-author submission per attendee along with the expectation that the first author of a submission will present the work once it is accepted.
There are three different submission types:
- Standard submission, to be allocated to regular sessions (4 presenters, 1-hour slots) or to high-density sessions (6-8 presenters, 1-hour slots)
- Panel proposal submission, which include up to five presenters’ contributions outlined in at most 100 words per contribution, and a 250-word description is given of the panel’s general purpose and cohesion.
- Research escalator submission, where innovative new studies or research proposals are outlined by early-career researchers (on a Master’s or PhD candidate level) who are looking for a discussion or advice on their ideas from peers and/or established scholars. No studies need to be performed for submissions of this type to be accepted, but they are evaluated for their baseline quality level. Accepted presenters will present for around 5 minutes before opening up group- or plenary discussions or one-on-one meetings with established researchers. This submission type is not open for in-progress work by researchers who hold a PhD.
NeFCA Educational Network Topics Submissions
The Educational Network intends to realize an exchange of ideas on and experiences with educational matters by organizing roundtables and workshops about issues that are relevant for those who manage and teach communication science degree programs at Bachelor’s, Master’s, Research Master’s, and postgraduate levels.
We will invite contributions from people teaching in the field of communication science that address topics such as innovative teaching methods, successful or not-so successful cases related to teaching communication science, or links between education and the professional field. Contributions may concern a theoretical reflection, a presentation of a specific case or best-practice approach, or empirical research regarding one of these topics.
Submissions should be a maximum of 750 words all-inclusive (but can of course be shorter) and can be submitted until November 10th, 2023, before 17:00.
